A rant, of sorts

While I was sitting around watching some show on MTV, My Life as Liz, I got to wondering about high school again. The chick in the show, Liz (who would have thought?!?!?!?!), was graduating high school and I remembered something I said in the last few months/weeks/days of high school; that I'm only going to see a few people from high school ever again." Lo and behold, I am correct. Not that I mind too much, but still. In a way, I wish I saw more of the people I knew in high school that I actually talked with....or just had more people to hang out with and talk to in general besides my new house mates, Brian and Erica, and my ever shrinking group of close friends.
To continue more on my life post high school and referencing My Life as Liz, Liz moves to NYC at the end of the show (or what I believe to be the end, don't really care) and all her friends are sad to see her go. I have yet to leave and probably won't actually be leaving the Souderton area until I'm done college, at which point I go where ever the Peace Corp. deems to send me, all assuming that I can actually join the Peace Corp. Everyone who is close to me will be gone by the time I leave so there will be no one to miss me.
Don't get me wrong, I am glad for everyone who got out of the Souderton area, I just don't feel like things last, things change....

  1. You`re definitely right, things are changing rapidly and people are moving on and moving away and growing distant. Even our group to a certain extent. I too wish I could see our high school friends more often, I guess we`re luck to as frequently as we do. I miss Llama in New York and even Andrew and you sometimes. I don`t think that`s going to change and in some ways that`s good.

  2. I`ll always care about you guys and I`ll never stop missing you no matter how far away you all are. You`ll all always have a friend in me.

  3. I think it's largely a mistake to think that somehow things ought to last. Friendships are great, their value is transcendental and they shape our lives in deep and meaningful ways. But none of that implies that they should "stand the test of time". The fact that they don't doesn't do anything to degrade their meaning or their value.

Sometimes (okay, a lot of the time) it's hard to believe that this is so. But I've come to think that it's true.

    On the other hand.

Friendships are exceedingly resilient, as Karl says. You'll always have a friend in him. That doesn't mean your friendship will always feel and act the same way in your lives. But the friendship itself can last. What was effortless before might become something you have to put a lot of work into tending... but it's still there.

When this isn't the case, when the friendship does seem to evaporate or vanish over time. Well, harsh as it may sound, then it wasn't meant to last. It's sad that it happens, but it's nothing to actually regret. It's not that you want this friendship that you cannot have or retain. It's that you want a friendship that no longer exists. That's a very different sort of privation.

For friendships that really have vanished, if you could somehow resurrect them, or get back into more regular contact with these people, you wouldn't find anything there that you wanted when you started missing that friendship.

My point is, though, that friendships that can be preserved (and are worth preserving) will endure, no matter how it seems. And the ones that you lose, no matter how it seems now, can't be preserved (and possibly aren't worth preserving).

The only way to tell the difference is just to live, and to try to be happy. So, Misha, try not to get too depressed. Live life, and be happy. Friendships are awesome enough to take care of themselves, for the most part.

There, that is my ranty thing.
